The bible makes us understand in Psalms 4 that we should continually have faith in
God. It talks about where David spoke to God and asked Him to answer him when he
calls on Him. He also asks God to have mercy on Him and hear his prayer. The latter
part of the verse tells us that David believed and trusted God by saying He will keep
Him safe. In Isaiah 41:10, the bible also says ‘’ don’t be afraid, for I am with you. ‘’Don’t
be discouraged for I am your God”. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up
with my victorious right hand .As children of God; our Father has already told us in His
word that we should not be afraid.
WHAT IS FEAR?
Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain or harm. In Mark
chapter 4: 35- 41, the Bible tells us about how Jesus calms the storm .Verses 37 to 39
talks about how fierce the storm was ,how scared or frightened his disciples were and
also how Jesus commanded the storm to be still and it obeyed. The disciples then
asked each other, who is this man? Even the winds obey him. This verse tells us that
we should never be afraid because we have an Almighty Father who created us in His
own image and likeness. As children of God, we are expected to put God first in
everything we do. We must not let fear overtake us.
HOW TO OVERCOME FEAR?
As children of God, we must not allow fear to overcome us. We are to trust God and
keep His commandments. Obedience also matters because when we obey, we do not
get punished so there is no need to get scared just as proverbs 1:33 says “but all who
listen to me will live in peace, untroubled by fear or harm’’ Psalm 34:4 talks about how
David prayed to the Lord and He answered him. The Lord also freed him from all his
fears. This tells us that if we continue to pray without ceasing, the Lord will also free us
from all our fears just as he did for David. The saying that ‘’Prayer is the key’’ must be
very consistent in our daily lives. A summary of Hebrews 13:5-8 also assures us that
Jesus never fails, He never abandons, He is our helper and He says we should not fear.
He also said we can overcome fear by following the example of faith from our leaders’
who taught us the word of God.
PEOPLE WHO OVERCAME FEAR IN THE BIBLE
SHADRACH, MESHACH AND ABEBNEGO: These people overcame fear by talking to king
Nebuchadnezzar and refusing to bow to the ground and worship the gold statue. They were
then thrown into a blazing furnace and even though many people were scared of king
Nebuchadnezzar, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were not afraid of Him because they
knew and believed in the God they serve that he would never forsake them.
JOSEPH: Joseph overcame fear by going to jail for a sin He did not commit (lying with
Potiphar’s wife). He feared God and did not want to sin against Him. Even though he was not at
fault he still obeyed and went to jail.
DANIEL: Daniel who also worshiped and served the Lord also overcame fear by entering into
the lion’s den. He was asked not to serve any other God apart from idols or gods. He still prayed
without ceasing in the lion’s den and God saved him by shutting the lion’s mouth so that they
would not hurt him.
WHY WE SHOULD NOT BE AFRAID
The bible tells us that we should never be afraid no matter the circumstance we should
just have faith. In Deuteronomy 20: 1, the bible said “ when you go out to fight your
enemies and you face horses and chariots and an army greater than your own, do not
be afraid for the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt is with you’’. Also, in Mark
5:36 the bible tells us that Jesus can fight for us in any situation no matter the
circumstances just like how He told Jairus to have faith because his daughter was only
sleeping and not dead. Jesus then performed a miracle by raising the dead.
