“Do not be afraid” I know right, sonds cliché, like something your mum would say to you when you’re too scared to go to school because of that bully or when you’re too scared to go to bed with the lights off.
I get it but in Christianity it means a lot more, let’s take a look at our case study for this message: King David
In Psalm 46 David expresses his inability to fear and his reason for this in a poem, he describes the power and might of God and his confidence in God.
I especially love verses 5 and 6 which state
“God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
lifts his voice, the earth melts.”
David was a man who truly understood the power and love of God for him, he knew that God was willing to keep him safe, he knew that he was never alone and that he had a caring and unfailing father who was always watching over him, this was his confidence and the reason he had no fear.
To him “DO NOT BE AFRAID” was no cliché statement because he had a strong reason why, a reason that had become a part of him but many Christians degrade that statement, they see it as just one of the things the Pastor always says in a sermon or one of those phrases you see as the Quotes of the day and as a result, they always fear even though God is on their side.
This is because the word is still logos (the written word) to them and not Rhema (the spoken word)
What’s the Difference between Logos and Rhema?
LOGOS is the word of God written as it is but RHEMA is the word received when you meditate and ruminate upon the logos so much that it penetrates and reaches your spirit, it is inside the logos but it has to be unwrapped. It’s the same word that everyone reads but everyone gets a personal RHEMA.
If Christians properly meditate on this message, they will no longer say it themselves because the pastor says they should but because they truly understand why they should not fear.
God is king, yes but being King doesn’t distract him from his role as our father. The Bible tells us in Matthew 7: 9 & 10
“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
This is the reason why we should not be afraid, God loves us and will never abandon us or forsake us, when our earthly fathers fail, He remains. He loves the 7+ billion people on Earth as though he has just one child. If you know and understand this, you wouldn’t go out worrying about getting shot on your way to work or school because you have superior backup going with you wherever you go, the kind of backup the world is no match for.
God tells us in the bible that HE WILL NEVER LEAVE NOR FORSAKE US.
One thing I’ve understood in Christianity is that God is ever faithful to his word.
