All around the world, many people are trapped in their misery by guilt. They feel like they will never be forgotten, that their life is over because of something they may have done in the past. Well, of course, it’s good to feel bad about it but what is it worth wallowing in guilt? Well, let’s find out.
What is Guilt?
I believe everyone can relate with the scenario of having this constant pain and sense of regret deep inside you that haunts you whenever you do something wrong. It’s like this accuser that follows you wherever you go. What that voice or feeling is, is guilt.
According to the Cambridge dictionary, guilt is a feeling of worry or unhappiness that you have because you have done something wrong,…’ It is as a result of your conscience that God has placed in the human spirit. Your conscience knows what is wrong and right, and it desires to do what is right. However, the will and power to abstain from evil is almost useless when it comes to the dark spiritual forces. That’s why no matter what man does, man always falls into sin.
Guilt makes you know you have done the wrong thing so you can go to God who has the power to help you out of it.
However, once that trickery devil is around, things are not always as straightforward as they should be.
The Lie about Conviction
Earlier on, I read some comments on a YouTube video, Navy Seal gets WRECKED by God | AMAZING story“ that compelled me to address the person. As a response a a conversation, the individual said, “…I know, doesn’t make me feel less guilty.”
Just for the record, they video was about the salvation of a man who thought he could not be forgiven.
This statement reflects how the devil uses guilt to keep many people from experiencing God’s true and sincere love. The devil has made many Christians feel like the Holy Spirit convicts them of their sin so they take it as a punishment for their mistake. Is this really true?
John 16:8 says, ‘And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.’ Many people interpret this scripture as saying God will convict believers of their sin.
When you read the scripture carefully, multiple times if you have to, you will notice that the party being convicted of sin is the world – those who don’t believe in Christ. And the sin they are convicted of is not that they stole, or had sexual immorality, or they lied. It is their unbelief in Jesus which means that they are still subject to sin and so they will always be its victim.
God points to the world plainly that you should receive Christ because that is the only way they can leave above sin.
With this said, does it feel like God also convicts his children of sin? Absolutely not. Since Jesus said the sin being referred to here is the unbelief in Him and His ministry, we as His children are free from that because it is through our faith in Him that we became His children in the first place.
What are Christians convicted of?
Which of these ways do you think is right to correct a child?
- Beating the child and telling him what you did is wrong OR
- Showing the child what is expected of him.
The latter of course. Same goes to Christians. Believers are not convicted of sin but of righteousness. When we sin God knows we have sinned so then He points us to what righteousness is and who we are in Him.
If God really was convicting his children of sin, I wonder how many people will still be his children today. Will I still be a Christian if that was so? Well only God knows.
So it was that response of our conscience through guilt, that makes us feel bad amd ashamed. However, once you go to God sincerely, ask for forgiveness, He will help you out of it and assist you in exhibiting His righteousness. Woah!! That sounded nice init?
Christ died for you past, present, and future sins. He knows your sin so he died to give you ther chance to live a better life. Bro, sis, that grief, sorrow, and guilt you are letting the devil drown you in is not worth it. Christ isn’t doing that to you, so no one is supposed to do that.
They reason the devil does that is because he is trying to put the jugdement on him – and of the coming judgment.- on we Christians.
It’s not about who God deserves
Another common thing people say is that God deserves more than them. Well news flash, God deserves more than all of us. There is nothing we can do that is up to the love He has shown us. Without Him, we are nothing.
God doesn’t want the narrative to revolve around who or what God deserves because it’s not possible to give him what He deserves. He created the whole universe. What can we offer that is up to that? What matters is that he loves you and wants the best for you. He died for us, so that in Him we will become our true selves. That’s what really matters.
God created you and loves you, forget every order thing, stop sulking about what you can’t change, and focus on following Christ for through that you will become the real you – Christ.
Conclusion
The Holy Spirt does not convict his children about sin, it’s the devil that does that. When we do wrong, He points us to His righteousness so through we will become the righteousness of God.
